Brief Screening Report - The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games has many crucial and emotional scenes but the most important one in my opinion is only ten minutes into the film. This scene depicts the reaping. It starts with all of the children gathering and registering,
which includes having a sample of their blood taken. They are then corralled in pens like animals and are forced to watch a video that explains why the hunger games are necessary each year. This is a very emotional scene because initially Prim, Katniss’ younger sister, is chosen as the female tribute for their district but Katniss volunteers before Prim can even make it to the stage. Katniss takes Prims place in the hunger games to save her life.

This is also a visually interesting scene. Throughout the start of the movie you are shown people and places within District 12 and everything is very gray and monochromatic. It gives the impression of a community of lower social standing and very little money. However, when we first meet Effie Trinket, the Capital escort assigned to District 12, she is dressed in bright purple with matching lipstick and hair. This shocking change in color and intensity gives her the impression of money and popularity. Even her personality is bubbly and she is obviously much happier and much better off than anyone in District 12. All of these things, from the emotional aspects of the scene to the lighting and coloring are what makes this scene so important to the film.

  1. I have never watched The Hunger Games simply because I didn't know what it was about. You do an excellent job describing the movie so it seems interesting for the reader. I like how you described the one scene from the movie. This was very well stated and showed you really know the details well.
